ISPO 2013

ISPO = cool to be there, great to see all the new things coming out, soooo many familiar faces, crazy, loud, good vibes…

This year I didn’t make it to all of my sponsors, sorry Riccardo @ Shred and Kiwi @ Riggler…. Due to the snow chaos we arrived @ Ispo around noon, were limited with time but at least had a glimpse at the Fischer booth – keep your eyes aware on the new Big Stix 🙂 I’m already riding them, sooooooo cool skis, love them!!!! Thanks to Fischer for your great support!!!!

Junior Freeride Camp Axamer Lizum

Two days in the backcountry with 16 young, motivated Freeride kids – what a pleasure!

http://www.freeridecamps.at

Together with mountainguide Davv Pitschmann we held this years fourth Junior Freeride Camp, this time in the Axamer Lizum, close to Innsbruck. He is an absolute pro when it comes to snow and avalanche safety and it’s great to work with such a guy on the mountain…

Due to the weather conditions and the avalanche danger, the first days’ focus was more or less on interpreting the avalanche bulletin, beacon search, etc… with the kids. Always great to see how easy the kids learn and how motivated they are!

Mrs Holle brought some snow over night, so on the second day we could ski some powder with the kids! Fun in the snow, wohoooo!

Thanks to Ortovox and ABS Airbag for supporting the young shredders with safety gear!

Skitouring-Instructor Education

Skitouring, guiding a group, avalanche safety, building a bivy, Rutschblocktest, Schaufeltest, Orienteering, working with a compass, etc… all parts of the second week of my skitouring-instructor education… 15 men, one woman – that’s me 😉

We were based in Hintermoos/Salzburg and had probably one of the worst weeks in terms of snow condtions: rain, “Bruchharsch”, very warm temperatures but as it was an education week, no prob 🙂 You have to deal with the conditions anyway… And take it the way it is…

Highlight of the week was hiking the Schwalbenwand 2011 m on a beautiful day, skiing down 12oo altitude meters in finest “Bruchharsch” 😉 hahaaha…

All in all it was a great, informative week, with lots of input from our mountainguide Stefan 🙂 Thxxx Stefan 🙂

Back in the game…

After nearly a month of my tree crash, the torn ligaments in my shoulder and the trouble that my knee is causing me, I’m still not “painfree” but at least it’s getting better. Thanks to my physiotherapist Mary @ Physiotherapy Huber I’m back in the game. Not every day hitting the snowfields but at least from time to time. Working on getting back soon, very soon!

Still I was out there for some events, for example the Junior Freeride Camp in Saalbach. It’s great to work with motivated, young shredders that want to improve their skills in the backcountry. As skiing is an outdoor sport, you always have to accept the weather conditions and can’t change the fact when it’s shitty out there… That’s the way it is – thank goodness!  At that weekend the avalanche danger was out on 4, so very risky out in the backcountry, raining nearly above treeline and stormy wind,  well not the best conditions to hold a Freeride Camp but we still made most out of it!

So we were more focussing on beacon searching, probe profile, interpreting the avalanche bulletin and stuff like that… It was  great weekend! Thanks to all the riders and coach and skibuddy Michi Mayerhofer for some cool time in Saalbach!

Fischer European Teamweek…

Last winter was the “First Edition” of the Fischer European Teamweek. We were so lucky, had great weather and conditions, perfect playground at the Rudolfshütte/Weißseegletscher Region.

This time was a bit different. Stormy weather, windblown snowpack, hardly any visibility. Due to my injury I was up there just for two days but it was good to get out and see nearly the whole Fischer Family gathered up upon 2315 m. Thanks a lot to FISCHER and everybody involved for making this happen! Also the team couldn’t stay there for the whole week as the weather conditions stayed the same but they went on to find more powder. The webisode should be online soon! Will keep you posted about that!

This winter I am also organizing some Off-piste Days for Freeriders in Co-operation with the Austrian Naturfreunde. http://www.tirol.naturfreunde.at/ Together with the Austrian mountain club (Alpenverein), they are the largest mountain organisation in Austria. Just last weekend I had a day out in the blue with some motivated touring and freeride women, improving their riding skills in the backcountry. Fun day 🙂

Pictures are not uploading at the moment, will try it later…

Inbetween Physio and training I had to get out, at least once to rock and roll 🙂 Here is the edit from a really cool day:

Back on training now…

Enjoy life and have fun out there,

Mel:-)

Injured…

There is never a right time for being injured but when you’re outdoors most of the time and do sports, injuries happen… Sucks but can’t help that fact. It’s part of the game…

Crashed into a tree nearly two weeks ago while skiing in the backcountry and tore the ligaments in my shoulder. Happy that nothing more happened and also lucky that it’s the left shoulder… Also my knee is not perfect at the moment, well it all comes at one time 😉

Physiotherapy, training and getting fit again is on my daily schedule now… Getting better from day to day but still some work to do. Hopefully I’ll be back soon on snow…

All the best and take care of you,

Mel:-)

Happy, healthy new year!

Hope you all had great christmas holidays and a good start into the new year!!!!!

I celebrated the new year with my friends up on a mountain hut, enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery with great people! Thanks Dani, JB, Jim, Carmen & Stefan for a wonderful come-together!!!! It was such a fun evening!!!!

One day before new year’s eve we’ve been skiing in Ischgl. Never been skiing there before but heard that it’s good for off-piste skiing so we wanted to check out the area… Though it had dumped two days ago we found still some cool off-piste runs and were enjoying the silence away from the Aprés Ski music and more than 10.000 people in the ski area. Crazy!

It was the last run down, an extraordinary tree run, steep and still good snow, where I had bad luck and hit a tree with my shoulder. Result from the X-ray the next day: torn ligaments in the shoulder (Tossy 2), sportsbreak for 10 days, physiotherapy… Same procedure as nearly every year 😦 I guess there’s never a correct time-out for an injury but things happen for a reason, still trying to find out why this happened…

Have a lot of free time at the moment though… 😉

Before the injury I spent most of the time with my friends on the mountain. Great days and moments, here some impressions:

Training hard to get back on track as soon as possible!

Ride on, stay safe and enjoy what you do!

Take care, Mel:-)
